Scoutmaster Notes

Jay Fletcher

Now that Fall sports are wrapping up, we can get back to the business of running the troop. This is the time of year when Webelos are visiting Troops as part of the process of deciding which to join. Full participation by our Scouts is essential to give the best impression of our troop to these prospective members.

Webelos from several dens will accompany the troop on the Halloween and the wilderness survival campouts. I have a special request that older Scouts make themselves as visible as possible during the campouts and the meetings when the Webelos are visiting. We need the support of all our members to attract new Scouts to join us.

Summer Camp

The troop traveled to Seven Ranges Scout Range to once again enjoy Summer camp. A wonderful time was had by all who attended.

The following adults were in attendance for the full week, Jay Fletcher, Mark L’Ecuyer, Keith Davis, Bill Wahoff, Bill Mumford and Kevin Wohlever

A number of rank advancements and merit badges were earned during the week. The summer court of honor recognized the achievements of the efforts during summer camp. Everyone who was in attendance for the week earned their "Pipestone" honor camper award.

The highlight of the week was the troop winning the camp wide site inspection and earning the right to lower the flag at the end of the day on Friday. We even supplied the bugler, with Chris Wahoff earning a "coup feather" for his excellent rendition of taps.

Y2K Preparedness

The year 2000 is approaching rapidly, and as any good scout, you need to be prepared. But at what level should you be prepared?

You may have heard that problems may occur with computers at Midnight on December 31, 1999. This is the much talked about Y2K problem.

Do you need move into a log cabin, with a hand water pump, wood stove and enough food to last four weeks? Well you could, but you would miss the first few weeks of school!

Will there be problems on January 1st, 2000? Probably. Will there be massive problems that will cause the decline of civilization? Most definitely not!

So what do you need to prepare for? That is the real question. There will be isolated problems. The most likely problem to occur will be the inability to complete a phone call, as millions of people try to call friends and family to see if they have suffered any problems associated with the new millenium.

The best way to prepare for the new century is as you would a severe winter storm. Make sure you have a plan in case you lose power, heat or water. Have firewood nearby, if you have a fireplace. Make sure the flashlights, candles and matches are nearby. Have a couple of gallons of water available. Make sure have some food in case you finished all of the holiday ham, it could be a few days before you can get to the store.

These are some of the stops you should take during the winter storm season.

As far as Y2K is concerned, the worst thing you can do is overreact. You don’t need to take all your money out the bank. You shouldn’t keep large amounts of money or valuables in your home. You don’t need to move to the country to survive. You just need to be a scout that is true to the scout motto, "Be Prepared".

After you and your family are prepared, the next best thing you can do is check on your neighbors, especially if they are elderly or disabled. Make sure that they are ready for riding out any rough times.

Be prepared, while we may not have problems on January 1st, the next "Great Blizzard" may hit in December, or January or February…..
