Summer Camp - by Ryan Cross
On the week of June 29th--July 4th eighteen scouts attended summer camp at Seven Ranges. For the first few days the weather was very miserable. One day we got a break, but the next day we had the worst storm I've ever seen in my entire life. Then the rest of the week we had pretty nice weather.
Only one person got a rank advancement. That was Matt Wohlever, who became a Star. Also Chad Davis earned the Chaplainâs Aid. Fifteen different merit badges were also earned that week. Every scout that went on the summer camp trip earned at least one merit badge.
Kenny Belton, First Aid; Nathan Chenenko First Aid; Ryan Cross, First Aid; Chris Ensign, Basketry, Swimming; Ben LâEcuyer Basketry, Swimming, Indian lore; Matt Wohlever, Communications, Basketry, Environmental Science, Weather; Chad Davis Environmental Interpreter, Forestry, Soil and Water Conservation; Erik Fletcher, Environmental Interpreter, Forestry, Soil and Water Conservation; Brandon Balinger, Mammals; Kevin Rankin, Environmental Interpreter, Forestry, Soil and Water Conservation, Nature; Bryan Kossmann, Archery, Astronomy, Nature; Kyle Arnold, First Aid; Dan Friedman, First Aid; Mike Gillespie, First Aid; Greg L Martin, First Aid; Brian Tulloh, First Aid; Chris Wahoff, First Aid.
FLOWER SALE WRAP-UP -
by Mr. HarveyHow long does it take for 18 hanging baskets and 78 flats of flowers to disappear? On Saturday May 8th at Selby Park in Worthington it took only about 3 hours, as the first Troop 862 Spring Flower Sale drew to a close. All flowers were picked up by 11:15 AM. The flowers were nice and the baskets were very full and healthy; A great value for $12.00.
Congratulations to the top 3 sellers; Chris Wahoff, Adam Rice, and Kyle Arnold. Sales totaled $1152 and all profit, a total of $388.80, was deposited into Scoutsâ accounts. This was an easy fundraiser, and the Scouts earned $4.05 for each item sold. Based on this yearâs success we plan to offer this opportunity next year. Thanks to Mr. McKim and to Mr. Dave Latshaw of the Worthington Optimist Club for extending this opportunity to the Troop.
IRONMAN COMPETITION - by Mr. Harvey
The sky was gray, thunder was in the distance, and the 3rd annual Troop 862 Ironman competition was about to begin. Just as the participants entered the field it began to rain. And rain it did, for about 10 minutes. After the group was thoroughly drenched the rain stopped, the sun came out and the games began.
Nick Harvey, Scout Varsity Sports Captain and this yearâs Ironman organizer explained the events to the adult leaders, Mr. Birnie, Mr. Fletcher and Mr. Harvey. Each participant selected one of two groups of events. Push-ups, football throw, Frisbee toss and Standing Long Jump were in one group. The other group of events included 100 yard dash, Obstacle course, Mile run, and completed pass (football). Based on a point system similar to the one used in Cross Country meets, the top three winners from each group of events took part in the Ironman championship event, consisting of the completed pass and push-ups.
After the dust (uh.... splashing) had settled the overall winner was Adam Rice. The top 6 winners placed as follows: First, Adam Rice; Second, Matt Wohlever; Third, Eric Fletcher; Fourth, Phil Birnie; Fifth, Nick Harvey; Sixth, Greg L. Martin. Prizes were awarded to these winners and participation prizes were given to all other contestants. A total of 18 scouts took part in this yearâs Ironman.
